Plymouth Mega Ride
This year sees the 17th Mega-Ride (14th August 2011), and with the sun shining (we hope!), there will be an impressive turn out on the day. Thousands and thousands of bikers pour into Lee Mill Industrial Estate for the charity ride which takes the bikers to Marley Head and then back into the City Centre, ending up on Plymouth Hoe where the bikers are greeted with a huge array of trade stands, catering stands, live music and even bouncy castles for the kids. This year's Mega-Ride has been confirmed for Sunday 14th August 2011.
The bikers are asked for a £3 charity donation at Lee Mill and the total amount donated will be spilt 50/50 between the two charities Chestnut Appeal for Prostrate Cancer and the Starlight Foundation for Children.
We hope you will continue to support the Mega-Ride and we look forward to seeing you on the day
The very first Mega-Ride was started 17 years ago in 1995, by Ron and Michele Densley of the Plymouth Motorcycle Club.
Meeting at the Novotel car park, approximately 400 bikers turned up. Back in 1995 other than a fabulous ride out there had been nothing arranged for after the ride but, everyone who took part must have had a good time because in 1996 they came back and this time they brought their friends!
For the 2nd Mega-Ride over 800 bikers turned up and each year the numbers attending have continued to increase until the Plymouth Mega-Ride has now become the largest motorcycle charity ride out in the UK.
When the Mega-Ride was just a few years old it moved from the Novotel car park to Lee Mill Industrial Estate, which was just as well, as by now the numbers of bikers turning up for the annual event was in the thousands. As well as a change of location for the start of the ride, Plymouth Hoe Promenade was "acquired" for the destination of the ride and over the years the whole concept of the Mega-Ride has continued to grow. Now an estimated 8,000 bikers take part and when they arrive at Plymouth Hoe they are greeted by an array of trade stalls, food stands and live music, there's even something for the kids!
